Hatred – any kind of hatred – is about fear, first and foremost. I have experienced hatred in myself, I have felt it, acted on it, been it before – and it has always been about fear.

It is a fear of losing control, a fear of change, a fear of loss, a fear of being exposed or having to face your demons. It is a fear of not being able to face reality. (more…)

I didn’t study directly after school. There was no money, and I fell pregnant shortly after so all money I earned went towards my household. Years later I studied through Unisa because it was cheaper and I received a bursary at my job which I had to pay back partially when I left. I also took out a study loan for further studies – something which wasn’t easy as you need to confirm income or have someone to provide surety. It took me two years to pay off a loan for a six-month course.

Now imagine how much harder it must be for someone who grew up in real poverty and oppression – not my pseudo-poorness which I perceived to live in from my standpoint of entitlement. (more…)

Social media activism and the loss of compassion

Some people are so concerned with macro socio-cultural values that they inadvertently debase micro socio-cultural values.

Fact: the global culture has led to a more knowledgeable and interconnected individual.

The result is a global social network which does not shy away from addressing issues of a social or political nature on social forums and media. While the aim of such discussions may be inherently positive – such as to educate or enlighten others or draw attention to negative occurences, tendencies and values – the end-result is most often negative. In the name of ‘global accountability’, many individuals on such forums are marginalised, alienated and may suffer psychological bullying for either challenging views or not formulating their views in a sufficiently logical and coherent way.
