I’ve been on many (too many) forums where people try to connect spelling and grammatical abilities to intellect – because, of course, if you cannot spell you are ‘lesser’, ‘dumber’ and (don’t you know it?) downright uneducated.
As a writer I have worked with many (too many) people who assume that I must somehow look down on others who struggle with language and writing. They assume I, too, worship at that pretentious altar of grammar naziism.

If you’re a copywriter used to working on the print, branding or entertainment spheres, chances are you find SEO a bit tricky. If, on the other hand, you are a digital specialist, you may find that editors tend to reject your content compiled or written outside the jurisdiction of uncle Google.
That’s because proper writing and SEO find themselves at opposite ends of the writing spectrum. Their contradictory goals may make it hard to choose which is best – readability or searchability? Language specialists and techies have been bumping heads for a while, and unfortunately the only loser is language. For now.. (more…)
13 January 2016 has a great big red ‘X’ on my calendar. It’s the day I finally decided to publish my first novel.
Admittedly, I could have spent a few more years crafting the plot and editing the book to perfection. A Hollywood director may have caught wind of my award-winning masterpiece and used it for his blockbuster movie starring a host of famous starlets. Okay, okay, so that’s a bit far-fetched, but I guess my point is that it was hardly perfect. It’s not gonna change any lives or be quoted to exhaustion. But it was my first book. And it has been an exhausting and exhilarating journey. (more…)
